Territory Team Aims for Hat Trick

The NT Tenpin Bowling Team for Athletes with a Disability travels to Melbourne hoping to claim their third straight National title.

"It is fantastic to see these athletes represent the Territory and I wish them the best of luck," said Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton.

"The Team of 15 bowlers - two from Alice Springs and 13 from Darwin - will attend the 2009 Tenpin Bowling Australian Disability Championships.

"With over 200 of the Australia's best Tenpin Bowlers competing at the championships it will be a tough competition.

"I am sure they will represent the Territory with pride and perform their personal best.

"The team has for the last two years won the Tenpin Bowling State vs. State Handicap Challenge.

"These inspiring Territorians are hoping to take out the finals for the third year running; which would be a fantastic achievement for the Territory.

"Athletes will also compete in singles, doubles and the four team events at the championships.

"The team has been generously supported by their families, friends and Territory businesses."

"To be able to defend this title would be such an honour for the team", said Team Manager Michael Goodrich.

"Everyone in the team have all worked tirelessly to reach these heights."

Support for world conference on women in sport

The Australian Government has committed $100,000 to support the 5th International Working Group (IWG) World Conference on Women in Sport.

The conference will be held in Sydney in May 2010 as a landmark event in raising the profile of women in sport.

The Government is committed to promoting the role of women in sport and increasing recognition for women sporting achievements and this funding for the IWG Conference is a practical means of effecting change in this area.

This commitment will provide the IWG organising committee with additional secretariat support for this international conference.

This is another example of the Government’s commitment to raising the profile of women in sport.

The IWG was established in 1994 as an independent body, consisting of representatives of key government and non-government organisations from around the world.

Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC, Australia’s Governor-General, will act as Patron in Chief of the event, with Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG will act as Patron.

Innovative Cycle Lanes Launched in Hobart CBD

The Minister Assisting the Premier on Climate Change, Lisa Singh joined Hobart Lord Mayor, Rob Valentine to launch the on-road cycle lanes on Argyle and Campbell Streets.

Ms Singh said the project is part of the Hobart Regional Arterial Bicycle Network and includes innovative design features that are a first in Tasmania, to increase cyclist safety.

"The State Government is committed to cycleways right across the state," Ms Singh said.

"That is why we announced $4 million dollars in the 2008-09 budget for trails and cycleways.

"This particular project is the first cycleway in Tasmania to include highly visible coloured surface treatments at points along the route where there is an increased likelihood of interaction with motor vehicles.

"Additional safety features include 'bicycle storage boxes' at signalled intersections to increase the visibility of cyclists, and a lane separation strip where feasible, which acts as a buffer zone between cyclists and motor vehicles," Ms Singh said.

The State Government contributed $160,000 towards the Argyle and Campbell Street cycle lanes with funding also coming from Hobart City Council and the Australian Government.

"It is wonderful to see all three levels of government working together to deliver this type of infrastructure.

"We need to continue to roll out infrastructure that enables people to have alternative transport options so we can combat fuel costs, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and get people fitter and healthier.

"The health benefits from improving Tasmania's cycling infrastructure are considerable. According to the World Health Organisation, a 30-minute cycle trip per day halves the chance of becoming obese or diabetic.

"Visitors to our state will also benefit from improved alternative transport infrastructure."

Other projects that are receiving support as part of the Hobart Regional Arterial Bicycle Network include:

Extension of the inner-city cycle-way in Glenorchy

Clarence foreshore trail at Bellerive Bluff

Planning for the Bonnet Hill cycling route in Kingsborough

Foreshore trail at Jetty Road in Brighton

Sport and Recreation Tasmania has also had discussions with Councils and other key stakeholders regarding projects of a similar nature in the North and North West of the state.

"Cycling has a big role to play in the government's plans for alternative transport and infrastructure for Tasmania," Ms Singh said.

State-of-the-art athletics stadium ushers in new era of sporting excellence

Elite and junior athletes, local sporting groups, schools and spectators will benefit from the new state-of-the-art athletics stadium officially opened by Premier Colin Barnett and Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron.

“The WA Athletics Stadium will provide our sportsmen and women with world-class conditions. It also pays tribute to Western Australia’s past sporting greats with the naming of the Shirley Strickland Grandstand and the Herb Elliott Drive,” Mr Barnett said.

“Wally Foreman’s contribution to sports media and dedication to the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) has been acknowledged with the naming of the Wally Foreman Walk.”

The Premier said the WA Athletics Stadium had already been recognised as a high performance venue by Athletics Australia and would host the Commonwealth team selections and National Athletics championships in April 2010.

In opening the facility today, the Premier acknowledged the previous government’s role in the project.

Mr Waldron said the new stadium would be WA’s competition venue for elite athletes at major meets and home to the wider athletics community in the State.

“It will also be a great venue for State championships, club competition, inter-school meets as well as for Little Athletics,” he said.

“The athletics stadium is just one of a suite of new facilities being built by the State Government, including basketball, rugby and gymnastics facilities, along with those recently completed such as the world-class rowing facility at Champion Lakes.”

The stadium features:

* a 2,000 seat grandstand with capacity for a further 8,000 on grass banking

* duplicated event sites on the front and back straights (pole vault, long jump, triple jump, javelin, discus, shot put).

* stadium and grandstand orientation to take advantage of the prevailing wind conditions

* the Mondo track surface used at the Beijing Olympics and twelve-lane front and back straights with nine lanes on the bends

* the incorporation of energy-efficient stadium lighting to allow twilight and evening training and events.

* a grassed internal arena that has been designed to accommodate soccer (i.e. stadium is multi-purpose).

* a suite of energy and water saving devices and equipment such as waterless urinals, solar panels on the roof, flow controllers and timers on all taps.

* recycled water from the Subiaco Waste Water Treatment Plant will be used for irrigation purposes with bore water used for flushing and back-up purposes as well as a huge supply of rainwater, harvested from the roof of the grandstand.

“This is a great example of a facility that has been designed in close consultation with the target users,” the Minister said.

“Both the WAIS and Athletics WA have been close collaborators with the team from the Department of Sport and Recreation.”

The WA Athletics Stadium will be managed by Venues West (formerly the Western Australian Sports Centre Trust).
