Motor Racing Carnival Set to Continue on the Gold Coast
The thrills and spills of a world class motor racing carnival are set to continue on the Gold Coast, Premier Anna Bligh announced.
Ms Bligh said Indy cars would no longer feature in the carnival but the exciting A1GP series would now join the V8s in October.
"We have reached in-principle agreement with the A1GP and expect to finalise contractual arrangements within the next week," Ms Bligh said.
"The A1GP is a world class racing series with an action packed race calendar that includes Great Britain, China, Mexico, Portugal, Malaysia, New Zealand, Indonesia, South Africa and The Netherlands.
"As a result of this deal Queensland will now be a permanent fixture on the calendar as well.
"The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport features national teams - including Australia - competing against each other on a level playing field with identical cars.
"It is true test of driver skill and determination with the cars lapping three to four seconds quicker than Indy cars.
"And instead of racing for a manufacturer, sponsor or driver they race for their national flag.
"The cars use cutting-edge technology with Ferrari signed up to a six year deal to manufacture and supply all racing engines and consult on design and manufacturing.
"Top drivers from around the world compete with the famous Andretti family fielding a team which will next year include one of this year's most popular drivers from the Indy Racing League - Danica Patrick
"I am sure the A1GP will be a terrific attraction for both 'revheads' and new fans to the world of motorsport.
"It will give a new lease of life to our event on-track with all the fun and excitement off-track also set to continue."
Minister for Sport Judy Spence said the Indy Carnival had undergone many incarnations in its 18 year history and this promised to be one of the most exciting.
"We have had Indy Cars, CART, Champ Cars and the Indy Racing League," Ms Spence said.
"However the A1GP series is one of the newest and most exciting in the world.
"It is unfortunate that hurdles in relation to timing of events and funding could not be overcome with the owners of the Indy Racing League.
"They have an expanded series of events and our Indy clashes with the early part of the American Football season. Moving our race to March as they had requested was not an option due to the clash with the F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne and the Clipsal V8 race in Adelaide.
"In addition a March race would have involved track construction right in the middle of January school holidays and we would not tolerate Gold Coast residents being inconvenienced in that way.
"It is disappointing but we will certainly not lose anything with the addition of the A1s".
Ms Spence said the addition of the A1GP series would once again showcase Gold Coast and Queensland to the world.
"The audience for A1GP continues to grow each year with the broadcast reaching more than 700 million household across the world during this year's season," she said.
"Television exposure equals tourism dollars and more international tourists to our shores.
"Our motor racing carnival generates around $60 million for our economy each year and in these tough times it provides a terrific boost for the local economy and community."

1800 kids to get grants under Local Sporting Champions program
Over 1800 individual young sportspeople and over 200 teams across Australia will be awarded grants each year under the Government’s new Local Sporting Champions program.
Young Australian athletes and junior sports teams will be able to apply for funding to help cover the cost of attending significant or specialist sporting events, Minister for Sport Kate Ellis announced today.
'The Local Sporting Champions program will help young sportsmen and women, as well as teams to compete at significant sporting events,' Ms Ellis said.
'Funding will be available to help people aged 12 to 18 years to help cover the costs of attending and competing in major sporting events.
'Grants of $500 per individual and $3,000 per team are available to help meet costs such as travel, equipment, uniforms, and accommodation.
'This will particularly help young sportspersons and teams if they have to travel interstate to compete, or they live in regional or rural areas and have to travel long distances to compete in major events.”
A total of $9,000 a year in grants will be available for each metropolitan electorate and $12,500 a year in grants for non-metropolitan electorates to help young sports people achieve their sporting goals.
Applications for grants can be made at any time throughout the year, either through the Australian Sports Commission or the office of the local Federal Member.
In order to be eligible to receive a Local Sporting Champions grant, applicants:
• must be aged 12 to 18 years (inclusive);
• must be required to travel a distance of 250 kilometres or more, return.
• be participating in an official national sporting organisation (NSO) endorsed state or national sporting competition, or national school sport competition.
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has been charged with the overall management and coordination of the program and all applications will be assessed by the ASC to check the eligibility criteria of each application.
A list of applications that meet the eligibility criteria will then be provided to Members for their consideration.
'Sport plays an important role in the social life of local communities throughout Australia, and in the health and wellbeing of all young Australians,' Ms Ellis said.
'These grants will help local teams and young athletes to realise their goals and will support the next generation of Australian sporting champions.'

Stephanie Rice receives QAS Award for Sport Excellence
It has been a year of golden moments for triple Olympic gold medallist Stephanie Rice, and today the winning trend has continued for the Queensland swimming star.
Sport Minister Judy Spence presented Ms Rice with the Peter Lacey Award for Sport Excellence at the annual Queensland Academy of Sport Champions' Luncheon today, recognising her outstanding achievements in the pool throughout the year.
Ms Spence said: "The Peter Lacey award acknowledges the QAS athlete who has achieved the greatest international success during the year while also serving as an ambassador for sport.
"This year, Stephanie has cemented her position as one of the world's leading female swimmers, following her record breaking performance in the 400 metre individual medley in Beijing - securing Australia's first gold medal of the games.
"She went on to win another two gold medals in the 200 metre individual medley and the 4 x 200 metre freestyle relay - both in world record time, becoming Australia's only triple gold medallist of the games.
"Stephanie's incredible results at the Beijing Olympics were an inspiration to all Queenslanders, and testament to her hard work and intense training in the lead up to the Games.
"I congratulate Stephanie on receiving this prestigious award and wish her all the best in her future sporting endeavours."
Ms Spence said Stephanie now joins the esteemed company of previous winners including Vicki Wilson, Geoff Huegill, Grant Hackett, Susie O'Neill, Kieren Perkins, Kerrie Meares, Geoff Trappett, Jodie Henry, Leisel Jones, Emma Snowsill and Libby Trickett in winning this award named in honour of an Australian surf lifesaving icon.
"Before his passing in 1997, Peter Lacey won 14 World Championship medals and was one of the inaugural Board members of the QAS," Ms Spence said.
"A legend in the sport of surf lifesaving, this award ensures that Peter's name and legacy lives on an d remains associated with the highest level of sport in Queensland."
Ms Spence said the QAS 'Team of the Year' was also recognised at the event, with the award going to the QAS Softball program Softball program.
"The Queensland Heat softball team won the National League in 2008, with seven of these athletes also on the Australian squad that brought home bronze in their last appearance at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
"Queensland athletes exceeded all expectations at the Olympic and Paralympic Games - bringing home 87 medals in total, including 18 Olympic gold and 5 Paralympic gold.
"These athletes set a great example to the next generation of young athletes, and demonstrate to everyday Queenslanders the benefits of leading a healthy and active life.
"Our Q2 goal for Tomorrow's Queensland is to reduce obesity rates by a third by 2020, and to make Queenslanders the healthiest people in Australia.
"The excellent achievements of al l our athletes helps us to achieve this goal - inspiring people to get active and spreading our message of healthy living."
